Choosing materials
Back teeth do the heavy work. Front teeth are what people see. The right material is not the same for both.
At the back, strength wins. Molars take hundreds of kilos of force every day. Metal and gold restorations handle that better than tooth-coloured ones: they do not chip or crack, they can be made thinner so less of your own tooth has to be removed, and gold wears at a similar rate to natural enamel, so it is gentle on the teeth it bites against. They are not pretty — but on a tooth nobody sees, longevity is usually the better trade.
At the front, appearance wins. Where a tooth shows when you smile, tooth-coloured materials are the sensible choice, and the forces there are far lower. A common middle path is a metal-backed crown with porcelain only on the surface that shows.
Materials are a personal decision, and cost, appearance and how long a tooth is expected to last all play a part. We lay out the options for your situation and you choose.
